Worthy of More Praise

James Worthy was so good. He could have been "the man" on pleanty of teams, but quietly went about doing his business on a daily basis. I think Shawn Marion could learn a bit from Big Game. Shawn, you might not get all the praise and you might not be featured the way you could be on another team, but if you're winning, who really cares? Look how it worked out for James. With three rings and a hall of fame call, I'd say it worked out just fine. Here's a video of Big Game doing his thing throughout his career with the Lakers:

okay, but maybe the reason worthy found it so easy to keep his mouth shut was exactly because he was winning three titles and appearing in the finals every year. maybe shawn marion wouldn't whimper so much if his team actually won something.

Amen, bruthah. I'll never forget Big Game's 14-18 shooting performance in Game 4 of the '84 Finals. The Lakers may have lost the game, but damn Worthy was good.

You can also add Robert Parish to that list of quietly awesome third bananas.

His spin move is just as good as I remembered - respect!

Weel done i really like this.
i love Pheonix and i feel Shawn needs to realize just HOW GOOD he has it in Pheonix.
If he really wants to keep crying then go and get rid of him and get someone that will enjoy being a part of a "Winning" franchise.
Good job.

Sweet footage.

Maybe Marion needs to realize he isn't Worthy. Given that, playing third banana on a contender ain't a bad thing.

As whinny as he is, I truely think a lot of it has to deal with the "chip on his shoulder"
I think he needs it to play the way he does. I think if he ever accepted his place and role, his output would drop.
He really wants it this year, and is sick of being knocked off, so he demanded a trade to increase the size of his chip.
Sheed needs technical fouls to play inspired basketball, Matrix needs to feel disrespected, and he's good at convincing himself that he is.
I mean, common, no human could really truely feel disrepected by the praise Marion gets (not to mention the paychecks Marion gets).

So smooth. As a Celtics fan, I used to have nightmares of James and his silky smooth dunks on the break.

I can see the third banana comparison but after that they have nothing similar in their games. Worthy was unstoppable one-on-one, not so much with Shawn. Marion can jump out of the gym, but can't make a lay-up or any touch shot, other than his one- handed floater, to save his life. Worthy was an incredible finisher at the hoop, just watch that clip.

Did James Worthy ever miss a layup? Ever? The fundamentals were so much better back then.

Nate, I don't think people called Worthy "Big Game James" during his playing days. Watch the CBS coverage from the eighties. Read the magazines of that period. The nickname was probable a concoction of sportswriters in the late 90s.

Or watch Game 7 of the 1988 Finals vs. the Pistons, where he displayed all his tricks in the arsenal (spin moves, statue-of-liberty finger rolls, the one-dribble "power move").

people want amare to be like hakeem, but i can't see that happening. but i'm willing to settle for an Amare with "Worthy like" post moves.

what has Marion actually won with the suns?

Chick Hearn named him Big Game James for his huge performances in the playoffs, during the prime of his career. Finals MVP in 88 for example

nick, i got it wrong. the monicker "Big Game James" started being used in the articles around 1990, based on Google Archives. Certainly not during the 80's Championship years. that's why i don't recall it anymore since i've moved on from the lakers after they won their BACK TO BACK.
