Draft Advice For the Lakers: Draft Sean Williams

Conventional wisdom says that the Lakers should draft another point guard prospect with their 19th overall pick in this year’s draft. However, I’m of the belief that they should go in a different direction. They already have a young point guard that they are grooming in Jordan Famar, and really shouldn’t add another young guy to a very inexperienced backcourt. Also, Phil Jackson has never really had a traditional point guard play in this system. If anything the Lakers just need to find someone that can come in and fill it up from the outside on offense, as well as play something a little bit better than the matador style defense the Lakers point guards have provided over the last few years. With Farmar already in place, I think they should use (all or part of) their mid-level to pick up another more experience guard to fill the shooter/defender role, and use their draft pick to find a shot blocking/rebounding big man or a scoring guard.

Before he became a hot commodity, my top choice for the Lakers was combo guard Rodney Stuckey. But now that it looks like he’ll be going no lower than 15, I think the best prospect for the Lakers is Sean Williams. If not for his off the court issues, Sean would have been a top ten choice in this draft. He’s more athletic/explosive than any big in the draft outside of Greg Oden. He’s the kind of guy that changes the game on the defensive side of the ball. I mean he did set the Boston College single season shot block record AS A FRESHMAN! On the offensive side of the ball, he is still very raw. But like Tyrus Thomas in Chicago, the guy knows how to finish. Think about how many points per night Kwame Brown would have scored this season if he knew how to finish.

As well, the Lakers major problem this past season was on the defensive end. They lacked shot blockers, and big men that could bring energy on the defensive side of the ball. That’s the main reason why everyone is clamoring for the Lakers to bring in Jermaine O’neal (one of the best defensive bigs in the game). With Kobe Bryant and the triangle offense, the Lakers were one of the best offensive teams in the league. But to become one of the elite teams in the league, they are going to have to get better on the defensive side of the ball. Drafting a guy like Sean would be a step in that direction.

Everyone is going to knock Sean because he smoked a lot of weed in college. But didn’t Lamar Odom have issues with weed when he first came into the league? People used to think of Lamar as a knuckle head, yet now they think of him as one of the best citizens in the entire league. Sometimes people can be a little too hard on young men. As long as he wasn’t physically abusive to anyone or stealing from people, I’m not going to knock the kid for having a weed habit. Most guys grow out of that at some point (okay, maybe not everyone).

This is the kind of pick the Lakers would never make. Why? Because it’s bold! Say what you will about Isiah Thomas, but that guy knows how to draft. I have a feeling that if the Lakers don’t swoop on Williams, Isiah will pick him up, giving him the shot blocker/rebounder that he needs to play next to Eddy Curry. Mitch, Jim, whoever…if you’re listening…don’t pass up on this kid!

I'm a Laker fan. I think we should trade our pick and Chris Mihm for a dependable veteran who can preferably play the point and shoot.
